Collaborating Institutions

REMAIN is a smartphone app designed to assist underserved populations in staying in HIV care and maintaining their antiretroviral (ART) medication adherence.

About

EPI-LoVE will address the barriers of HIV care

The overarching goals of this research study are to:

  • Determine how to enroll and retain a digital cohort of people living with HIV who are struggling to engage in care and maintain consistent viral suppression;
  • Utilize the digital cohort to understand HIV care engagement and to predict when people may fall out of care, resulting in viral non-suppression; and
  • Based on an individual’s risk profile, offer tailored evidence-based interventions to be delivered through the REMAIN app.
  • This study will assess not only traditional HIV care markers like viral suppression and engagement with care, but other factors that may impact a person’s engagement with the HIV continuum of care. For example, this may include experiences of stigma, racism, violence and challenges with access to mental health care and substance use treatment.
  • This study will enroll approximately 1,000 individuals aged 18 and older who are living with HIV to use the REMAIN app, adapted from HealthMpowerment (HMP) platform for up to 48 months. These participants will be nationally distributed and at high risk for, have a history of, or currently not virally suppressed. For more information about the HMP app and other studies involving the app platform, visit their website.

How it Works

Participants who consent and enroll in the study will be required to create an account and download the REMAIN app to their smart phone.

Through the app, the participant will submit data including a baseline enrollment survey, quarterly follow up surveys and frequent (daily and/or weekly) app-based check-ins.

Participants will also be asked to submit a blood sample every 6 months to assess their current HIV viral load (VL). They may do this through their own healthcare provider, through an AHF clinic, at a local lab, or if they are unable to go to a physical location, they may receive a mail kit for a dried blood spot (DBS) collection.

Participants in the study will be enrolled for 18 months, and potentially up to 48 months
